Mike Flood

Born and raised in Southern Ontario, I always found comfort surrounded by nature in general and forests specifically. I grew up learning to ski on the Niagara escarpment and very quickly I realized that skiing would be a life long passion for me. A
pastime that I have enjoyed for over 40 years.  In my youth, I was a Special Olympics swimming coach, life guard, swimming instructor and Radio Announcer.

After leaving the University of Windsor in 1994, I began a career as a Freelance Film and Theatre Technician.  I worked in a variety of departments from Carpentry to Metal Fabrication and eventually specialized in Lighting and Rigging.

In the Fall of 2003, we moved as a family to Rossland for a fresh start and better skiing :) This move was overwhelmingly positive and all three children have become proficient athletes, artists, musicians and positive community members.  They are all out on their own now, following their own paths.

In 2006, I brought my lighting design experience that I gained while working in the Film Industry to the residential and commercial market here in the West Kootenay with the firm called Mountain High Lighting.  With the many high quality building projects that I have been involved in, I have seen what works and what needs to be improved on local construction sites.

The City of Rossland is growing, and one of the biggest challenges that I see is a lack of building supply outlets in the city.  We have all experienced heading down the hill for "just a few more 2x6's" and this is one of the biggest challenges that I am hoping to solve for the residents of Rossland.  I look forward to growing Rossland Lumber to serve the needs of Rosslanders and I believe that this business will be a true community asset.

Growing up in the cold winters of Edmonton next to one of the smallest ski hills in the country, my parents were quick to enter my sister and I into downhill ski racing. As a family, we would make winter trips out west, which instilled the early goal of eventually living amongst the stunning mountain vistas that the prairies simply could not match.

After high school, my athletic endeavours lead me to play for the Varsity Roller Hockey Team at Bethel University in McKenzie, Tennessee. During my four years in the sunny southern states, I obtained a degree in Business Management, and also a new found appreciation for small town living.

I then returned home to Edmonton, where I worked various on-site, and office roles for a construction management company. At the same time, I also began to dip my toe back into the ski industry, working a handful of different roles for the small ski hill I grew up skiing at in my spare time.

With the changes that the recent pandemic brought to all of our lives, I was shifted to a new position at my "day job", and decided it simply wasn't for me. I then dove head first into the ski industry by moving to Rossland, and working for Red Mountain Resort. From there I met Mike, who explained his vision for a lumber and hardware supply company in Rossland, and I could not have been more excited for the opportunity to be a part of it.

Being a new year round resident of Rossland, I could not be happier to be a part of such an incredible, and active community. I look forward to being a positive contributor to the community for years to come through Rossland Lumber, and various other local organizations.

I’m fortunate to have had a Rossland upbringing, and exposure to unique local opportunities. From early years spent ski racing at Red, to first biking the Seven Summits Trail as a teenager, to disc golfing, skateboarding, and hunting in the present day, my lifestyle has been heavily influenced by the local area. I coach part time with the Red Mountain Racers, and love improving my community.

My background includes a bit of forestry, botany, and lab research on softwoods, so it’s fair to say I’m a big fan of trees. I compete in the Canadian Rally Championship behind the wheel of my Subaru Legacy and one of my roles at Rossland Lumber is driving for deliveries; which unlike rallying, is done with an emphasis on safety.
